The Cost of Litter
Learn the economic, legal, and environmental effects of litter, on public health, plant growth, property values, taxes, neighborhood crime, vehicular accidents, and injuries to children and animals.
The most-littered items in the world are cigarette butts. Surprised? They contribute to fires, water pollution, habitat poisoning, health issues, and much more. Displays shared in this workshop will disturb you as will statistics and facts about cigarettes and butts.
The second category of most-littered items? Plastics. While Americans are recycling 12-13% of their plastic bags, almost 90 BILLION plastic bags, sacks, and wraps are used in the U.S. each year. That means 82 billion bags end up as litter or in our landfills.
In addition, Americans buy over 28 BILLION one-time use, disposable, plastic bottles of water each year – a good number of these are littered throughout our communities or end up in our waterways.
